Measuring progress during home workouts

The question of the effectiveness of home workouts is always relevant. Scientific studies show that the place of training does not affect its effectiveness. Outdoors, in the gym or at home - everyone can achieve significant results in improving cardio metabolic health.

According to a survey on the GoodFirms platform in 2022, 56% of respondents favor home fitness programs. In 2021, research firm OnePoll found that 48% people feel more confident trying new fitness activities at home.

In this article, you will learn about different methods of measuring your training progress, as well as many useful tips on how to stay fit and maintain your athletic performance.

How long do you need to train to see results?

The key to success is consistency and understanding of your goals. Sport should become a good habit and an integral part of life. Evaluate your progress and change your training routine in time to reach new heights and avoid stagnation.

Everyone's training progress is different depending on their goals. Here are some types of fitness goals:

  1. Cardiovascular endurance is the improvement of heart and lung function, which increases endurance and energy.
  2. Strength training is an increase in muscle strength and mass that promotes metabolism and reduces the risk of injury.
  3. Flexibility - improves joint range of motion and reduces the risk of injury.
  4. Mobility - strengthening joints and improving mobility, which helps in performing daily tasks.
  5. Stability and balance - maintaining good posture and well-being throughout the day.
  6. Muscle endurance is an increase in the ability of muscles to work for a long time without fatigue.
  7. Speed - increasing the ability to move quickly, which is useful in many sports.
  8. Power is a combination of strength, endurance, and speed.
  9. Mental endurance - improving stress resistance and overall mental health.
  10. Self-confidence - overall improvement of physical fitness and health to increase self-esteem, confidence and well-being

Tracking your fitness progress is key to achieving your health and fitness goals. By using effective methods of analysisyou can gain valuable insights, stay motivated, and make informed decisions to optimize your results. Each of the following methods contributes to a comprehensive understanding of your progress:

Fitness diary
You should make daily brief notes about your workouts, including exercises, sets, reps, and rest periods. Also write down how you feel during each session and any observations or improvements. This will help you track your performance, identify patterns, and adjust your routine.

Fitness applications

This method is a digitalized version of a fitness diary. In just a few clicks, you can fill in all the necessary information and keep it at your fingertips. Of course, when paired with a fitness watch, the app will work better and can independently analyze all the necessary data to track your results. This method is also the most convenient for measuring and analyzing blood pressure

Take pictures of your progress

And it's not about taking a selfie during a workout, although that's also a good tradition for many. Weekly or monthly photos should be taken at the same time because physical fitness can fluctuate based on food intake, hydration levels, hormones, stress, and other factors. Try wearing the same clothes to see changes in body composition since the last photo. This is also a significant motivation for both yourself and others. For example, in our online fitness club OFC, posting photos of BEFORE and AFTER a training course is one of the favorite moments for members and followers of the page.

Take measurements

Because weight is constantly changing, weighing yourself doesn't always give the most accurate results when tracking progress. You may not see the changes you want on the scale, but by measuring your waist, hips, legs, and arms, you can more clearly see how your body composition is changing due to your workouts. You should also do this at the same time of day to get clear data.

Wardrobe

Many girls have this preference to try on their favorite things to good music, make new combinations and admire themselves in the mirror. This is how you can track the results of your workouts, because when you change your physical shape, some things can look completely different on your body. A good practice is to choose a piece of clothing and use it to measure your progress on a regular basis.

Cooper's test
This test is usually performed among professional athletes, but many adapt it to individual training. Cooper's test is a methodology that allows you to assess aerobic capacity and MOC (maximum oxygen consumption). The test consists of a 12-minute workout (jogging, cycling, or swimming) or a standard set of 10 repetitions (push-ups, classic curls, jumping up from a lying position, squats, or lunges). The set of exercises and intensity can be adjusted to suit your needs - the main thing is to record the results and track changes. How often should I conduct such testing? Preferably once a month, but refrain from intense strength or cardio exercise after the Cooper test, giving your body time to rest and recover.

Challenge your body
Being able to do more challenging workouts shows progress and improves your fitness level. It also makes your workout routine more interesting. A good example of a challenge is the Challenges from coach Andriy Khomytskyi on his Instagram page. This way, you not only test your strength, but also find yourself on the same wavelength with hundreds of like-minded people, which gives you even more motivation and strength not to give up.

Mood.
Pay attention to how you feel throughout the day. Increased energy levels, improved mood, and reduced stress can be indicators of improved fitness. Regular exercise improves your overall health. Another factor in good training results is good sleep. And who doesn't want to sleep better, right? A study published in the European Journal of Sports Science found that improving cardiovascular fitness through sports leads to better sleep quality.

Productivity in everyday life
Do you find it easier to climb stairs, carry groceries, or play with your children? Improved performance in these tasks demonstrates the functional benefits of your fitness regimen.

You are not alone

Having a friend or loved one to train with is great, but it's even better to be in a circle of like-minded people and in online communication with a coach for advice, tips, and sharing results. You can also attend webinars and live broadcasts of professional trainers. You can find all this and more on our website. And a nice bonus - we organize many sports activities for free.
